Roulette Myths

Roulette is a game of chance, but with it comes some myths that are amusing and fun to know about.

The origin of roulette is French. It means “small wheel”. No facts are known about how it was invented.

One of the myths is that a French scientist named Blaise Pascal was experimenting with perpetual motion. He created a big wheel and one of his friends decided to use it as a gambling machine.

Another is that Francois Blanc, a founder of the first Monte Carlo casinos, was determined to win at roulette. So he added all the numbers on the wheel together and up came 666. He then saw this as a sign to sell his soul to the devil as a thank you for finding the secret.

Other myths are:

  • All roulette wheels are the same. Not true. The European wheels have 37 numbers and the American wheel has a 0 and a 00 added to it.
  • Also, with online roulette, some casinos have different size wheels, colours and forms that are unique to that casino.
  • Successive reds or black will come. That is impossible as there are no guarantees that if 5 consecutive reds come up, that the next will be black.
