Roulette Cheats – Padding

An intriguing and ingenious way of cheating at the roulette wheel was the use of padding on the wheel itself.

When a Roulette wheel is spun, the ball spins in the opposite direction to the spin and bounces across the numbers before it comes to rest on one number. The ball is held by raised lips between each number.

Padding some numbers made the ball bounce less. Accordingly, those numbers were more likely to capture the ball as it came to rest.

Casino operators had to use this technique during construction of the wheel or ensure any padding done after was unable to be detected. Usually the former method was employed using softer woods or metals and harder materials in other pockets. Padding afterwards involved using clear plastics to cover the painted numbers.

The discerning player however, would be able to detect padding by observing the consistency of the bounce as the ball passed across the numbers.
