Famous Roulette Bets – The Man that Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo
There are plenty of legends that are willingly passed from gambler to gambler as they discuss strategy and tales of big success. Probably none are as well known as the man that broke the bank at Monte Carlo! Monte Carlo is perhaps one of the most well known casino areas in the world, matched only by Las Vegas. Monte Carlo is known as the playground for the rich and famous and many a member of the elite can be found playing at the tables.
The legend comes from 1891 at a casino in Monte Carlo. Over a period of several days a gentleman named Charles Wells repeatedly returned to the casino ‘breaking the bank’ at each table! To break the bank means that all the available money at the table has been won and back then a rather sombre black cloth would be placed over the table to signify its ‘death’. The table would then be closed until the casino could replace funds. Mr Wells was a well-known conman and gambler and in celebration of achieving the honour of breaking a casino bank he has been sung about for years since!
